Berlitz Virgin Islands Pocket Guide (Berlitz Pocket Guides)
Published in Paperback by Berlitz Travel Guide (November, 1999)
Author: Berlitz Publishing Company
Average review score:

A great pocket guide
Although this book is small, it really packs a punch. It's loaded with tons of information that will help you on your Virgin Islands trip. It's not big and bulky either, so it lessens the packing space. We used it in conjunction with Frommer's Virgin Islands and that was all that we needed for our week in paradise. If you are looking for a book of history or detailed background though, this one isn't for you.

The Best Bermuda Book by far!

Bermuda: Gardens & Houses
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (May, 1996)
Authors: Ian MacDonald-Smith and Sylvia Shorto
Average review score:

the best coffee table book on Bermuda
This is an elegantly produced book, with thoughtful and scholarly writing by Sylvia Shorto, who is one of Bermuda's most knowledgable antiques experts and whose contribution lifts this book out of the realm of just another pretty Bermuda picture book. Ian MacDonald-Smiths pictures are well done and provide an excellent overview of the development of Bermudian architecture and style.

Between Two Islands: Dominican International Migration
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (July, 1991)
Authors: Sherri Grasmuck and Patricia R. Pessar
Average review score:

From Merengue to Washington Heights
Interesting, well-researched book on Dominican migration between the the Dominican Republic and the United States, "Between Two Islands," is an important book for those who want to understand the reasons and causes why many Dominicans leave their nation. The title, referring to the island nation and Manhattan Island in New York City (which houses the largest Dominican community in the world outside the island) catches one's attention, as this group stands to become the third largest group of Latinos in the United States (after Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans). The author has done careful and thoughful research in explaining the wave of Dominican immigration to the U.S., however little is covered on the large waves of Dominican immigrants to neighboring Puerto Rico or the Netherlands/Netherlands Antilles. You don't have to live in or near Washington Heights (the Manhattan neighborhood with the largest Dominican community in the city) to really grasp this books importance. As Latinos stand to replace African-Americans as the largest minority group in the country, it is important to understand why this is happening now and now back in the 1960's (Trujillo regime did not permit emigration from the country) or why many chose to go to New York. In addition to this book readers should also pick up a copy of the books "Why the Cocks Fight," and "Sugarball" to understand the Dominican experience entirely. Overall, this is one of the best anthropology books I ever read and I highly recommend it to all.

Birth and Rebirth on an Alaskan Island: The Life of an Alutiiq Healer
Published in Hardcover by University of Georgia Press (05 January, 2001)
Authors: Joanne B. Mulcahy and Gordon L. Pullar
Average review score:

This is a quietly beautiful and fascinating story
This is a quietly beautiful and fascinating story--a work of scholarship and a work of love. Joanne Mulcahy has written a stunning book about Mary Peterson, a remarkable woman, and about the cultural revival that both Mary and the author played crucial roles in bringing about. It is something few Americans know anything about--and all of us should.

Black Islanders: A Personal Perspective of Bougainville, 1937-1991
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (January, 1992)
Author: Douglas L. Oliver
Average review score:

good for a comprehensive over view of Bougainville
There are few books available to gain an understanding of modern (prior to 1989) Bougainvillian history.

The author is an anthropologist who spent time in mainly the South west (Siwai) in the 1930's and episodically since.

His review of the island's history, geography and culture is good and thorough. He presents interesting insights into the reasons for the crisis and some of the different groups and players, but not in great detail.

He could be regarded as biased because he worked for Bougainville Copper in the 70's and ? 1980's. However the book seems quite independant in its stance and it is likely that his prior association with the mining company is mainly responsible for him not expanding a bit more in this area.

It is not really dated and this is an indication of how useful a book it is.

Overall this is a must to read before visiting Bougainville, which is a very pleasant place as are the people.

The Black Soul
Published in Paperback by Irish Amer Book Co (August, 1996)
Author: Liam O'Flaherty
Average review score:

Searing account of love and pain
Absolutely one of the best novels ever to come out of Ireland. A love story involving three people, O'Flaherty's story is as wild as the Atlantic waves, as scorching as a baker's oven, as compassionate as a cow with her calf.

No one has ever written about the personal and social ramifications of adultery so feelingly.

The Bobbsey Twins on Blueberry Island

A magic world for a young child
This book was probably the second book I ever read as a second
grader in 1945. It took me into a mysterious and fascinating world which captivated my imagination ever since. Subsequently I read every Bobbsey Twin book I could get my hands on. Extremely well done series by an outstanding children's author.

Average review score:

true story that grips you and will not let go
one of the truly engaging aspects of this work is the day by day account of the shipwreak. By seperating the sequence of events in this manner, the author makes it easy for the reader to read what is in all other regards a sad yet human story. Excellent
